Basketball
WVU Mountaineers basketball plays in the Big 12 Conference and hosts NCAA Division I opponents in Morgantown, West Virginia at the 14,000-seat domed arena that has been home to Mountaineer cagers since 1970 and was renamed Hope Coliseum in September 2025 under a 10-year partnership with Hope Gas, the first name change in the building's 55-year history. The program has made 31 NCAA Tournament appearances, reaching eleven Sweet Sixteens, five Elite Eights and two Final Fours, in 1959 and 2010. The 1959 team, led by tournament MVP Jerry West, lost the national championship game to California 71-70, while the 2010 squad set the school record with 31 wins before falling to Duke in the national semifinals; West Virginia also claims the 1942 NIT championship and won another NIT title in 2007.
Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame inductee Bob Huggins coached the Mountaineers from 2007 to 2023 through the program's most successful modern era, and Jerry West and Rod Hundley remain the standard-bearers of its 1950s golden age. Fans arrive as the same Mountaineer Nation that fills Milan Puskar Stadium in the fall, greeted by the buckskin-clad Mountaineer mascot and the gold and blue of West Virginia University athletics.
